Paper Training A Puppy – Is Paper Training the Best Way to House Break Your Puppy?

A lot of people grew up thinking that paper training a puppy is the best way to house break a puppy.  It certainly is easy – you just put a layer or two of newspaper on the kitchen floor and hope it works.

That’s why, for a long time, paper training a puppy has been looked at as the very first lesson in puppy education.

However, paper training a puppy might not be the best way to potty train your dog

There are two things you should think about before you make your mind up that paper training your puppy is the right way to go.

  • Your schedule and the way you live, along with your personality and your puppy’s personality.

For example, if you’re a workaholic and spend a lot of time away from home paper training could be a good idea. A better idea, if you can afford it, would be to hire someone to take your puppy out one or two times a day. You could also enroll your puppy in doggie daycare.

  • Another thing to consider is that your small puppy could grow up and become a very big dog.

So, before you decide on paper training a puppy, think about what will happen when you have a full grown 60 pound dog making on paper in your home.  If that happens, the chances are that you’re going to have to deal with training your dog to go outside at some point in the future.

You’ve heard the phrase “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? It goes for potty training too. Although it’s not impossible, it’s a lot easier to train your dog to do what you want when she is a puppy instead of when she’s an adolescent or older.

The Right Way to Paper Train A Puppy

If you do decide to paper train a puppy it’s easy to send mixed messages to your dog if you’re not careful.

  • The best thing to do is to look at paper training as something to do in an emergency.  Like babies, young puppies cannot always hold it in until you get home or until you see that they need to go outside.

So begin taking your puppy out on regular walks when she is very young. Teach her that the right way to go is to go outside – leave the papers down only as a backup.

Put her leash on her and take her for a walk at the beginning of the day.  If nothing happens in 5 or 10 minutes take her back home

  • If she does make outside treat her as if she’s done the greatest thing imaginable. Pet her, give her a lot of affection, and tell her what a good dog she is.  Tell her she’s a genius.

Make her feel great by lavishing praise on her and you’ll get her attention and she will want to please you like this again.

  • Now, if your puppy has an accident in the house and you see it right as it begins, gently scoop her up and take her outside.  If she continues to urinate outside praise her a lot. She might think you’re crazy at first, but after a few times she’ll start to understand that going outside is better.
